OB Surgical Technologist - Family Birthing Center/Delivery Room


  • High School Diploma and minimum of one year job-related experience.
  • Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) or LPN license w/previous scrub experience
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers.

The OB Surgical Technologist assists the professional nurse in performing direct and indirect patient care activities and works under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse/Circulating Nurse.

Hours: 24 control hours

Shift: Variable three 8 hour shifts between 7 am to 7:30 pm Monday - Friday.

Provides technical assistance in the services provided during the labor and delivery stages of the obstetrical process and performs surgical scrub duties for OB related cases.

Facilitates turnover of operating rooms and delivery rooms. Requires critical thinking skill, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.

Capable to work in an ever-changing environment and respond appropriately to complex situations.

May perform clerical/other duties as assigned.

Preferred: OB experience, or one year of job-related experience.


To perform scrub duties and assist in the nursing care of the surgical patient before, during and after the surgical procedure.


1.Provides a safe, efficient, and supportive environment for the surgical patient.

2.Applies the knowledge of normal pathological anatomy and physiology and the actions of pharmacologic agents in order to individualize patient care.

3.Applies principles of asepsis in a knowledgeable manner to provide optimum patient care. This includes respect of the patient's right to privacy, dignity and confidentiality.

4.Prepares and knows the specific uses of all equipment and supplies used for surgical procedures. Demonstrates knowledge of the step by step progress of specific surgical procedures and display dexterity in the use of the required instrumentation.

5.Anticipates the needs of the surgeon in order to expedite the procedure, thus minimizing the patient's exposure to surgical and anesthetic stress.

6.Develops and improves skills in the organization of work and in assisting the surgeon in learning to use economy in time, motion and materials.

7.Identifies emergency situations and uses judgment in instituting established procedures to respond to emergencies in a calm and efficient manner.

8.Completes a minimum of 10 hours of continuing education per year, and maintains certification. Completes preceptor training and demonstrates the ability to perform one-on-one instruction for all students and staff learning the scrub role.

9.Participates in providing in servicing to other staff relative to role as surgical technologist.

10.Functions efficiently and in a professional manner in all aspects of surgical care, during both routine and special duties, recognizing the importance in teamwork, consideration and cooperation.

11.Fulfills all compliance responsibilities related to the position.

12.Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Must be a graduate from an accredited surgical technologist program, certified within 12 months of hire, or LPN license with prior surgical tech experience in an OB setting.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, procedures, instrumentation, equipment and supplies by anticipating the surgical needs at the field.
  • Consistently demonstrates and applies principles of aseptic practice as defined in AORN recommended practices.
  • Understands the preparation and specific use of all equipment and supplies used for vaginal and cesarean delivery.
  • Participates in "times-outs" prior to the start of the surgical procedure according to hospital policy guidelines. Verifies medications, concentrations, expiration dates of all medications received on the sterile field in concert with the circulating RN.
  • Handles all "sharps" in a safe and protective manner in consideration of self and others in supportive roles, such as, core techs, environmental services, and CPD staff.
  • Hand off of medications, irrigation solutions, and flushes to surgeon within the sterile field.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the step by step progress of vaginal and cesarean delivery and displays dexterity in the use of the required instrumentation. Identifies emergency situations and uses judgment in instituting established procedures to respond to emergencies in a calm and efficient manner.
  • Properly uses selected equipment and monitors patient environment.
  • Sets up sterile equipment for delivery.
  • Prepares instruments for sterilization.
  • Assures that OR's are completely stocked and always prepared for emergency procedures.
  • Accountable for the disposal of all bio-hazard materials and sharps.
