TITLE: Professional Development Specialist: Unit Based Specialist

DEPARTMENT: HealthQuest Professional Development (8376)

REPORTS TO: Assistant Vice President Professional Development

SUMMARY: The Professional Development Specialist is the clinical expert in evidence-based nursing practice in the areas assigned. The Professional Development Specialist will work under the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development roles established by the American Nurse's Credentialing Center (ANCC) to include: Educator, Consultant, Researcher, Facilitator, Change Agent, and Leader. The PDS will also exemplify the eight nursing characteristics identified in the AACN Synergy Model (Clinical Judgment, Facilitation of Learning, and Response to Diversity, Clinical Inquiry, Systems Thinking, Collaboration, Advocacy, and Caring Practices).


Responsibility I - Educator o Develops, conducts and evaluates programs that assist in meeting the educational needs of nursing staff specific to the unit scope of service and patient population. o Coordinates programs according to formal learning requests and annual nursing educational plans specific to department of responsibility. o Assists learners in the assessment and identification of their own learning needs and desired outcomes, adjusts content and teaching strategies based on assessment. o Incorporates principles of adult learning in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs. o Creates, both through mentoring and coaching, opportunities for learners to develop their critical thinking and clinical reasoning skills. o Coordinates new staff to the organization and specialized clinical environment. o Develops and coordinates core education to address patient population nursing care. o Coordinates educational plans related to initial and ongoing competency assessment and development. o Plans, prepares, and maintains materials for use in educational programs for accuracy, timeliness, and relevance to target audience. o Provides educational opportunities for nurses at all stages in their career development. o Implements teaching strategies appropriate to learner needs, desired outcomes, content, and context o Grounds teaching strategies in educational theory and evidence based-teaching practices o Identifies and acquires necessary resources, materials, and skills to deliver services and projects. o Selects and utilizes appropriate instructional approaches for timely development and evaluation of learning. o Develops collegial working relationships with other inter-disciplinary team members o Provides ongoing coaching to staff with the goal of improving critical thinking and technical skills. o Incorporates knowledge of cultural differences through effective instructional interactions.

Responsibility II - Leader o Facilitates the provision of clinically competent care by staff / team through education, role modeling, teambuilding, and quality monitoring o Provides leadership in the design, implementation, and evaluation process improvement initiatives and educational activities. o Provides leadership in planning, data collection, and quality monitoring. o Determines nursing practice and system interventions that will promote patient, family, and community safety. o Uses effective strategies for changing clinician and team behavior to encourage adoption of evidence-based practices and innovations in care delivery. o Promotes a practice climate conducive to providing ethical care. o Partners with APP / CNS to develop, implement, and evaluate specialty certification programs o Uses feedback gained from self, peer, and administrative evaluation to improve role effectiveness o Participates in professional development opportunities that increase one's effectiveness in the role

Responsibility III - Facilitator o Establishes collaborative relationships within and across departments that promote patient safety, culturally competency care, and clinical excellence. o Oversees unit/ division competency assessment process (Orientation, annual and advanced) o Practices collegially with medical staff, and other members of the healthcare team so that all providers' unique contributions to health outcomes will be enhanced. o Participates in models which educate team members about team processes such as quality improvement methodology o Help the clinical team establish and maintain effective working relationships and processes o Uses the skills and knowledge of organizational processes to assist with the removal of barriers and roadblocks o Works with the team to analyze the effectiveness of the team process o Provides timey, constructive, and thoughtful feedback to learners o Identifies and prioritizes emerging needs in collaboration with Professional Development and nursing leadership through assessment and evaluation of current processes.

Responsibility IV - Change Agent o Participates in processes that may be necessary in changes in organizational structure or goals, accreditation criteria, legal mandates, or advances in diagnosis, treatment and patient outcomes o Responds to changes in nursing practice and develops programs specific to area of responsibility to support those changes o Ensures that educational programs are congruent with the organizational mission, vision, and values o Manages multiple roles and responsibilities promoting a safe and healthy work environment o Utilizes effective strategies to initiate, implement, and stabilize change efforts o Provides leadership in conflict management and negotiation to address problems in healthcare o Engages in effective advisement, coaching and mentoring strategies that help learners meet their professional goals o Models professional behaviors for learners including, but not limited to, involvement in professional organizations, engagement in lifelong learning activities, dissemination of information through publications and presentations, and advocacy o Remains aware of current issues and trends in healthcare and translates them to the clinical team

Responsibility V - Researcher o Analyzes research findings and other evidence for their potential application to clinical practice o Integrate evidence into health, illness, and wellness management of patients, families, communities, and groups within area of specialty o Applies principles of evidence-based practice and quality improvement to all patient care areas o Assess system barriers and facilitators to adoption of evidence-based practice within designated area o Designs programs for effective implementation of research findings and other evidence in clinical practice o Cultivates a climate of clinical inquiry across spheres of influence: o Evaluates the need for improvement or redesign of care delivery process to improve safety, efficiency, reliability, and quality o Disseminates expert knowledge o Implements strategies for organizational change o Fosters an interdisciplinary approach to quality improvement, evidence-based practice, research, and translation of research into practice o Collaborates with the nursing management team to establish quality improvement agenda for unit, department, program, system, or population o Uses data to assess the quality and effectiveness of clinical programs o Develops quality improvement initiatives for area of responsibility based on assessments o Mentors nurses to translate research into practice. Mentors staff nurses, graduate students and others to acquire new knowledge and skills and develop their careers.

Responsibility VI - Consultant o Provides expertise for groups, departments, the organization and the community o Interacts with, and contributes to the professional development of peers, and other health care providers as colleagues o Provides educational consultation at the unit and organizational level through the participation in committees, councils, and administrative teams. This includes but is not limited to systematic evaluation of the quality and effectiveness of clinical practice, use of theoretical frameworks strategies and methodologies to promote behavior change, promotion of positive learning and practice environments, facilitation of skills, assessment of knowledge verses performance gaps. o Acts as an observer, confidant, fact finder, and expert (analyzes problem situation and probable cause) clarifying situations and offering education based on problem analysis o Responds to regulatory mandates for research and management of risk events (i.e RDE review, Root Cause Analysis) recommending educational strategies for implementation of performance improvement initiatives, risk management opportunities, and best practices o Participates in action planning by establishing goals, providing recommendations, and courses of action, facilitating implementations, and performing evaluation. o Responds to the identified needs of the area of responsibility to promote quality care and patient safety o Assists in the development, implementation, interpretation, and evaluation of program standards, policies, procedures, and best practices to meet the needs of managers and staff. o Uses knowledge of legal and ethical issues relevant to nursing education as a basis for influencing, designing, and implementing policies and procedures related to the clinical education environment

JOB QUALIFICATIONS Education: Master's degree in Nursing from an accredited program or currently in the process Minimum Experience: 2-5 years of educational experience in an acute care or academic organization or demonstrated expertise in a clinically equivalent role. Required Certification/ Registration: Current New York State Registered Nurses. Certification in Nursing Specialty is required within 6 months of hire. ACLS / BLS / PALS provider status required, instructor certification preferred. Physical Requirements: o Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing / walking o Must be able to lift 35 pounds (NIOSH) without the use of lifting, positioning equipment o Ergonomic stressors such as lifting, positioning, pushing, ad/or transferring of patients o Must participate in Safe Patient Handling Initiatives o Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching o Considerable mental and visual demands Mental Demands: o Ability to foster collaborative relationships, to work well under pressure, to organize and synthesize new information and prioritize tasks. Possess critical thinking, analytical skills and flexibility. Able to multi-task. Required detailed attention to work environment when interruptions cannot be controlled. Demonstrates sensitivity to customer needs and expectations. Working Conditions (OSHA Directive CPL-03-00-016): o Contact with patient's under a wide variety of circumstances o May be exposed to unpleasant elements (exposure to blood and other potentially infectious material) o Subject to varying and unpredictable situations o Handles emergency and crisis situations o Must wear Personal Protective Equipment to ensure your safety o PPE may include gloves, safety glasses, respirators, or coveralls, vests, and full body suits o May have contact with chemical, radiological, physical, electrical, mechanical, or other workplace hazards
