Job Summary
As a key member of the executive staff, the Senior Director of Engineering will provide leadership to the NPS Danbury Engineering group with a focus on meeting key performance objectives on all engineering projects as well as the long term development of the team and improvement in our practices. This individual will be expected to ensure that Engineering resources effectively execute in accordance with established and agreed upon standards of engineering excellence for design, development and release to production of profitable, producible products and services.
Job Responsibilities



  • Provide strategic direction and assure achievement of accountabilities for all engineering disciplines


  • As a member of the Danbury's leadership team and the NPS Engineering functional staff, function as a key contributor in determining the Company's competitive posture on current and future business


  • Accountable for decisions which have a direct effect on the Company's short- and long-range financial performance


  • Drive technical innovation by bringing new technology into the company directly or hiring the appropriate technology competencies


  • Select, train, mentor and motivate the technical engineering resources required to secure new business opportunities as well as provide competitive advantages through IR&D projects, technical advancements, and work efficiencies that will meet customer requirements and business objectives


  • Provide direction, motivation and oversight to engineering staff to drive successful execution of the engineering responsibilities on all programs and projects


  • Deliver products and services that meet cost, quality and time expectations by working collaboratively with Program Management and customers


  • Determine staffing needs, assess, manage and enhance employee capabilities to meet current and future business needs


    Job Responsibilities Part II


    • Provide performance management and developmental opportunities to existing staff as well as recruit new talent in order to meet technical gaps


    • Develop and implement improved procedures and standards for the department, to drive output that is high quality, accurate, on time, and within budget, including establishing key performance indicators for the engineering group and accountabilities for achieving results


    • Responsible for the development, planning, implementation, and achievement of key performance objectives for engineering projects, including the development of technical proposals, budgets, design approaches, customer interactions, and product presentations


    • Develop strategic partnerships with colleges, universities and research institutes to enhance institutional learning and our competitive posture


      Qualifications


      • An Engineering degree (BSEE preferred) with a strong preference for additional advanced technical education.


      • At least 15 years' experience in leading large, multidisciplinary Engineering organizations developing complex systems with demanding customer requirements.


      • Strong, demonstrated successful experience in developing accurate Basis of Estimates, performing stringent requirements management, integrated risk and opportunity management, and technical project planning and monitoring and controlling is essential


      • An understanding of US government procurement procedures and experience with military contracts


      • Proven ability to form, develop and lead a high performance subordinate team with effectively aligned people, purpose and process while fostering a culture which routinely executes timely, high quality, technically challenging development projects.


      • Demonstrated success in delivering products and services that meet cost, quality and time expectations by working collaboratively with Program Managers, Operations, Finance, Quality and customers.


      • The ability to think strategically while energizing & aligning people to achieve his/her vision for Danbury Engineering-this assumes the ability to effectively partner with internal functional leaders toward the achievement of common goals.


        Qualifications Part II


        • The ability to effectively work with and communicate to employees, customers, and top management.


        • Strong business acumen that demonstrates an understanding of business issues and linking solutions to the business strategy and outcomes


        • Experience directly supporting Department of Defense (DOD) programs


        • Experience working in a diverse business environment of primes contractors, subcontractors, joint venture partners, etc. and knowledge of export regulations and ITAR issues


        • Demonstrated success in collaborating with peers across other functional areas, organizations and sites


        • Candidates must be a US citizen and meet DRS security standards as imposed by DoD, including the issuance of any necessary security clearance by the US government within a reasonable time after commencement of employment.


          Preferred Experience


          • Demonstrated success in running IR&D budgets of $4M and organizational capacity to lead greater than 100 engineers


          • Demonstrated process improvement skills with Six Sigma or other formal training


          • Background in Power Electronics, Motor Controls, Sensing and Control systems


          • Experience in successfully developing and implementing process improvements with measurable results
